PASIPHAË AND THE CRETAN BULL 🐄💋🐂🏛🔥

MINOTAUR

Long before there was a Minotaur, there was the Cretan Bull.

And before the Cretan Bull, there was a promise.

King Minos wanted the throne of Crete.

To prove that the gods favored his claim, he called upon Poseidon, god of the sea, and asked for a sign.

Poseidon answered.

From the sea came a magnificent white bull.

Its appearance was proof of divine favor, but the gift came with a condition.

Minos was expected to sacrifice the Cretan Bull back to Poseidon.

There was one problem.

The bull was magnificent.

Too magnificent, apparently, for Minos to give back.

Instead, Minos kept the animal and sacrificed another bull in its place.

Trying to fool the god of the sea turned out to be a poor decision.

Poseidon knew what Minos had done.

And according to the myth, his punishment did not fall upon Minos alone.

It fell upon his wife.

Queen Pasiphaë became consumed by an unnatural desire for the Cretan Bull.

This is where Greek mythology takes one of those turns that makes you wonder whether you heard the story correctly the first time.

You did.

Pasiphaë wanted the bull.

And to accomplish what should have been impossible, she turned to one of the greatest craftsmen and inventors in Greek mythology.

Daedalus.

His solution was extraordinary.

He constructed a hollow wooden cow, covered it with cowhide, and designed it so convincingly that Pasiphaë could conceal herself inside.

But even Daedalus seemed to understand that he was building more than another clever invention.

He was building inside the consequences of someone else's choices.

“Why do we build these wonders for a king who forgets the cost of his own desires?”

Perhaps there was only one answer.

“Because the gods demand, we create.”

And so Daedalus created.

The wooden cow was placed near the Cretan Bull.

What happened next has been told for thousands of years, and there probably isn't much benefit in improving upon the ancient Greeks' description.

The important part is what followed.

Pasiphaë became pregnant.

The child she eventually gave birth to was unlike any ordinary child.

He had the body of a man and the head of a bull.

His name was Asterion—or Asterius in some traditions.

History remembers him by another name.

The Minotaur.

For King Minos, the cost of his own desires had become impossible to ignore.

The creature grew.

And as it grew, so did the problem of what to do with it.

Once again, Daedalus was called upon.

Think about that.

First, Minos's broken promise helped create the problem.

Then Daedalus was asked to build around its consequences.

This time Minos did not need a wooden cow.

He needed a prison.

And once again, Daedalus created.

He designed something so complicated that escape was said to be nearly impossible: an enormous maze of twisting passages at Knossos.

The Labyrinth.

The Minotaur was placed inside.

And with that, the consequences of a king's broken promise had been buried beneath Crete.

At least, that was the idea.

The Labyrinth could hide the Minotaur.

It could not erase the cost.

And it could not end his story—or the mythology that followed.
