There is something about Damien's stare.
I've seen a look like that before.
I worked in crisis beds for years. Every once in a while, someone would tell me they could see somebody who wasn't there.
At least, I couldn't see them.
They could.
Sometimes their eyes would settle somewhere beyond you. They were sitting right there in front of you, yet their attention seemed to belong somewhere else.
Somewhere you couldn't follow.
Damien has always reminded me of that.
There's a distance in his eyes.
He doesn't necessarily look frightened.
He doesn't look confused.
If anything, he sometimes looks strangely calm.
As though everyone else is looking at the room—
and Damien is looking through it.
Then comes that scene.
A woman looks toward him.
“Damien. It's all for you.”
Those few words have stayed with me.
It's the certainty.
The devotion.
Something has reached another human being so completely that even the instinct to remain alive seems to have gone quiet.
And for what?
For Damien?
That's the obvious answer.
I'm not sure it's the interesting one.
Because Damien is still standing there with that distant look in his eyes.
What does he see?
Maybe nothing.
Maybe something.
We see Damien.
She sees Damien.
And yet the scene somehow leaves the impression that Damien isn't alone.
Not standing beside him.
Not hiding somewhere in the room.
Something we cannot see.
That's where my imagination takes over.
What if Damien isn't controlling everything happening around him?
What if he's listening too?
What if that distant stare isn't the face of someone holding all the strings—
but someone who can see where the strings lead?
I don't know.
And maybe that's where we should stop asking Damien.
Because this is the point where his story opens the door to ours.
Something is on the other side.
I don't know exactly what it is.
But I know what we're going to call it.
Z-Lord.
