Neon Harbor

Neon Harbor

Inspired by the flooded forests and calm waterways of South America, The Sanctuary of Neon Harbor reflects the natural habitat of the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), one of the world's most recognizable freshwater fish.

Neon tetras are native to the Amazon Basin and surrounding river systems of countries such as Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. They are commonly found in slow-moving blackwater streams, flooded forests, and shaded tributaries where roots, fallen branches, and leaf litter provide shelter from predators.

Their brilliant blue and red coloration helps them identify one another in dimly lit waters. These small fish feed primarily on tiny insects, crustaceans, algae, and other microscopic organisms found within their environment.

Although neon tetras remain widespread, they depend upon healthy freshwater ecosystems. Habitat loss, pollution, and environmental change can affect the delicate waterways they call home.

Today, the neon tetra serves as a reminder of the beauty and diversity found within the rainforests of South America—a living jewel beneath the surface of some of the world's most remarkable waters.
