Buckwheat in La La Land: The Spelling Bee
“Your word is… demonstrate.”
“…could you use it in a sentence?”
“The sky turned orange as the sun set over the water.”
A pause.
Buckwheat looks at the judge.
He glances past him—
to the window—
“what light—”
no—
the light in La La Land burns orange.
His legs set.
A bead of sweat runs down his temple.
“…D—E—M—O—N—S—”
He stops—a beat—
The room holds.
“YOUR HONOR—
I GOTTA GO—
MY BUS—”
CRASH!!
Glass bursts—
chairs scrape—
voices break—
He’s gone.
A beat.
“Next contestant…”
a beat—
“…please stand up.”
