THE SONGBIRDS

Scientists estimate there are thousands of different kinds of songbirds in the world.

Among them are cardinals, bluebirds, robins, orioles, mockingbirds, sparrows, and countless others that brighten fields, forests, neighborhoods, and backyards throughout the seasons.

Their colors are often the first thing people notice.

The brilliant red of a cardinal.

The deep blue of a bluebird.

The warm orange of an oriole.

Yet beyond their appearance lies something even more remarkable: the extraordinary variety found throughout creation.

As believers, it is natural to admire the bird itself, but eventually our thoughts move beyond the bird.

Not:

"What a beautiful bird."

But:

"What a wonderful Creator."

No one fully understands the depth and variety of creation.

The colors.

The songs.

The instincts.

The seasons.

Yet they return year after year.

There is a rhythm to it all.

A quiet reminder that life continues moving forward.

There is another bird that comes to mind.

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker.

Thought by many to be extinct, it's become one of the most sought-after birds in North America.

For generations, birdwatchers have searched forests and swamps hoping to catch a glimpse of one. Occasional reports and disputed sightings continue to surface, keeping the debate alive among birdwatchers and researchers alike.

Some believe the bird disappeared long ago.

Others remain convinced it may still survive in remote corners of the American South.

What makes the story compelling is not simply the bird itself.

It is the search.

People are naturally drawn to things that are rare, beautiful, mysterious, or difficult to find.

A person notices a bird in the backyard.

A robin in the grass.

A cardinal in the snow.

An oriole among the trees.

Curiosity becomes appreciation.

Appreciation becomes understanding.

And before long, a person finds himself paying closer attention to the world around him.

Perhaps that is why the search for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker continues.

Not because success is guaranteed.

But because some things are worth looking for.

The same may be true of faith, friendship, wisdom, and the simple beauty found in God's creation.

If you happen to see one of these songbirds during your travels, take a moment to enjoy it.

You may be surprised by what a simple bird can remind you of.
