THE LOAD 🫏
On a dusty backroad between a stone wall and a pasture, a gray standard donkey made his way forward.
He was Equus africanus asinus, unladen weight approximately five hundred pounds, his long ears turning to catch the wind, his solid single hooves—not cleft, not split, but smooth and durable—striking the dirt with steady patience.
Around his neck hung a sign he had not written, but one he had come to understand:
KNOW YOUR LOAD.
On his back, the load had grown without his permission.
First came the small pig, sixty pounds of nervous optimism, who climbed aboard saying he just needed a lift for a little while.
Then came the larger pig, two hundred and fifty pounds of easy smiles.
“If he can carry you, he can carry me.”
He settled himself in and draped a green snake around his shoulders for company. The snake added another fifteen pounds of quiet pressure.
At the very top, a rooster perched and pointed forward, adding fifteen more pounds and a lot of direction, as if he were leading the expedition.
By the time the donkey reached the weathered sign on the left—
NOT EVERY LOAD IS YOURS—
his actual cargo had climbed well beyond three hundred pounds.
His Gross Donkey Weight Rating told the truth of it:
Unladen: ~500 lbs
Rated Cargo: 100–150 lbs (20–30% of body weight)
Actual Load: 300+ lbs—OVERLOAD
He was carrying fifty-seven to seventy-three percent of his own body weight. Twice, nearly three times his rated limit.
The math was not in his favor.
His knees knew it before his mind did.
He did not collapse.
Donkeys rarely do.
They endure.
But every step was a reminder that endurance is not the same as consent, and carrying capacity is not a challenge to be tested, but a boundary to be respected.
He continued down the road.
Around his neck hung KNOW YOUR LOAD.
Behind him stood NOT EVERY LOAD IS YOURS.
He understood both.
The trouble was, nobody riding him did.
“THAT'S GOOOD!” 💦
