About That Wing: Flying Into the Most Isolated Airspace in the World

The aircraft wing you see in this cover is no artistic guess — it's Air Koryo, North Korea's flag carrier and only commercial airline. State-owned and headquartered at Sunan-guyŏk, Pyongyang, it operates from its hub at Pyongyang's Sunan International Airport.

There are only two airlines that fly regular scheduled flights to Pyongyang:

1. Air Koryo (JS) — The national airline, often called the world's only one-star airline, operates international scheduled flights between Pyongyang and China (Beijing, Shenyang) and Russia (Vladivostok). On a regular schedule it only flies to Beijing, Shenyang, and Vladivostok.

Its livery is unmistakable: a white and grey fuselage with a horizontal stripe in national colors along the windows, the Korean name painted above the windows, and the North Korean flag on the vertical stabilizer. That red and blue cheatline on the wing in the image is directly from that livery.

2. Air China (CA) — China's flag carrier resumed direct flights to North Korea after a 6-year hiatus on March 30, 2026. The route connects Beijing and Pyongyang once a week, every Monday. Before the pandemic, Air China operated flights between Beijing and Pyongyang 3 times a week.
