MADDIE

I never imagined I'd become a cat owner.

Growing up, dogs always seemed to get the attention, and if I ever dreamed about owning a feline, it certainly wasn't a house cat.

When I think back, I always wanted a tiger.

Didn't we all?

But as we grow older, we sometimes lose—or simply forget—those childhood dreams. Funny how one thing leads to another, and instead of owning a tiger, you find yourself sharing your home with the smallest member of the feline family—a domestic house cat.

That cat turned out to be Maddie.

From the moment we brought her home from the shelter, we knew she needed time. She wasn't feeling well, and she certainly wasn't ready to trust us overnight. Like so many shelter animals, she had her own story before becoming part of ours.

Little by little, she began to recover.

With each passing day, she grew stronger, more curious, and little by little, she started letting us into her world.

As the days passed, Maddie continued to surprise us—not with loud or dramatic moments, but with little things that quietly found their way into our hearts.

One of my favorite memories is how, every few days, she'd cautiously jump onto the bed for just a few moments, hoping for a little affection. Over time, those visits became more frequent until one day she simply curled up beside me as though she'd always belonged there.

It wasn't just her health improving.

It was trust.

Another memory still makes me smile.

One afternoon, I woke up from a nap and glanced toward the bedroom door. For a few seconds, my brain couldn't make sense of what I was seeing. I just stared.

Then it hit me.

Maddie was sitting on top of the bedroom door.

There were a few stacked boxes behind the partially open door that she must have used to make the climb, but even then, the leap seemed enormous. What amazed me wasn't just that she got up there—it was how calmly she sat, perfectly balanced on that narrow edge, as though it were the most ordinary place in the world. I couldn't help but laugh and shake my head.

Moments like these made me stop and appreciate just how remarkable she really was. Every day seemed to reveal another side of Maddie that I hadn't seen before, and before long, she had completely found her way into my heart.

One thing we've learned is that Maddie is definitely a house cat. Whenever we open the back door leading into our enclosed courtyard, she doesn't make a run for it. Instead, she hesitates with a puzzled look on her face. Her tail fluffs up, her body tenses, and she's on full alert. It's almost as if she's thinking,

"What in the world is out there?"

She's also taken care of our mouse problem, which is really the reason we went to the shelter in the first place.

Watching her quietly track, patiently wait, and eventually catch a mouse was nothing short of remarkable. She seemed to know exactly what she was doing.

Right now, the score stands at:

Maddie: 6

Mice: 0

Needless to say...

She's earning her keep.

Another thing I've come to appreciate is the way we communicate. Obviously, it's not with words, but there's definitely something there.

Sometimes I'll say something to Maddie, and she'll respond in the slightest of ways—a tiny tilt of her head, a little twitch of her ears, a gentle shake of her fur, or simply the way she looks back at me.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I don't think I am.

It feels like she's acknowledging me in her own way.

Whatever it is, there's a quiet connection between us, and it brings a sense of peace that's hard to put into words.

It feels like a friendship.

When it comes to love, I think it's expressed in many different ways. With Maddie, it isn't through words, but through trust, companionship, and all those little moments we share together.

To me, cats fill a special place in God's creation. They remind us that some of His blessings don't have to speak to be understood. Sometimes they simply sit beside us, and somehow, that's enough.

We happened to visit the shelter during a special adoption event. By God's grace, there was no adoption fee that day. Looking back, it wasn't the money that mattered—it was the blessing. We opened our home to Maddie, and in return, she brought joy, companionship, and more than a few unforgettable memories.

Before Maddie, I never thought much about animal shelters. Today, I see them differently. Every shelter is filled with animals waiting for the same chance Maddie was given—a safe home, a little patience, and someone willing to care.

As it turns out, our family isn't alone. Today, there are more than 73 million pet cats living in American homes, and over 42 million U.S. households share their lives with at least one cat.

Yet the need remains. Millions of cats and dogs continue to enter shelters and rescue organizations each year. Millions are adopted into loving homes, but many are still waiting for someone to give them that same opportunity.

If you've ever thought about bringing a pet into your life, I hope you'll consider visiting your local shelter or rescue organization first.

You may not find the tiger you imagined as a child...

…but you just might find a friend who changes your life.
