The Path of Mastery: The Ranks and Titles of Taekwondo
In the traditional Korean martial art of Taekwondo, the black belt is not the end of the journey—it is truly the beginning. Governed by the Kukkiwon headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, the martial art utilizes a highly structured ranking system that measures a practitioner's lifelong dedication, philosophy, and discipline.
The Foundation: The Poom (품) Rank
The journey toward mastery begins early. Young practitioners under the age of 15 who successfully fulfill all black belt requirements do not receive a standard adult belt. Instead, they are awarded a Poom rank, represented by a distinctive half-red, half-black belt. Once the practitioner turns 15, this rank automatically converts into an official adult black belt.
The Living Apex: Grandmaster (9th Dan / Gu Dan)
As adult practitioners advance through the black belt degrees (Dan), their titles evolve. Instructors at the 4th through 6th degree are called Sahbum-nim (Master). However, the absolute peak for a living practitioner is the 9th-degree black belt, known as Gu Dan. To achieve this elite rank, a master must be at least 60 years old, pass a rigorous physical examination at the Kukkiwon, and defend a comprehensive 10-page thesis on the art. At this level, they are formally addressed as Kwanjang-nim (Grandmaster) or Dae-Sahbum (Great Grandmaster).
The Eternal Legacy: Supreme Grandmaster (10th Dan / Sip Dan)
Beyond the living ranks lies the 10th-degree black belt (Sip Dan), the ultimate and rarest honor in Taekwondo. This rank is almost never given to a living person. Instead, it is awarded posthumously (Myeong-ye) by the Kukkiwon to honor the legendary pioneers of the sport. Revered eternally as Supreme Grandmasters, these individuals are immortalized for a lifetime of work that shaped the global history and spirit of the martial art.
