King of Kings

By Scott L.

Author’s Note

When I was invited to a worship gathering and told I could read a poem,

I asked myself what I could possibly bring that would be worthy of the moment.

I thought about the writers I admire—especially Shakespeare, whose language shaped so much of our literary foundation. Yet even as much as I honor him, I hold the Holy Scriptures higher still. To me, they are the finest poetry ever spoken, the truest and most beautiful words ever written.

So I didn’t set out to outdo Shakespeare or step outside the foundations of great literature.

Instead, I wanted to write something that honored both:

the beauty of classical poetry and the eternal beauty of God’s Word.

This piece was shaped in iambic pentameter,

but it is rooted in Colossians 1:17—

the cosmic truth that in Christ, all things hold together.

KING OF KINGS

“And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

— Colossians 1:17 (NKJV)

He is before all things; in Him we trust,

the First, the Center, pulse of every star.

All things within the cosmos hold as one,

not by blind chance nor drift, but by His Word—

a Word that never fails nor fades with time,

a Light no darkness ever overcomes,

a Power older than the birth of days.

By that same Power all creation moves:

the galaxies still turn because He wills;

the atoms rest because His Voice gives peace;

our breath continues at His mercy’s pace,

for by His Kindness every heartbeat lives.

So He who formed the stars sustains our days—

the Anchor of existence, firm and sure;

the Architect who orders unseen paths;

the Quiet Force behind each rising dawn.

From His own steady Hand springs hope itself:

hope’s merriment, its laughter, joy, and mirth,

all written deep upon our waiting hearts.

Because of Him, we are held together.

By Love that shows the way our paths unfold;

In Him all things endure with life abundant. ❤️

Born Blessed in South Korea in 1969 and raised in Baltimore, I’ve built a career with 20 years in customer service and 10 years in behavioral health. The crowning jewel of my studies came when I earned the only passing grade of an A from a Harvard professor — a true master of the craft of Shakespeare

And the English language, whose guidance opened the gateway to worlds of imagination, discipline, and wonder.

Married for 25 years, I share the good life with two dogs (Isabella and Juliet) and one cat named Maddie. In my free time, I enjoy writing, biking, gospel music, and spending time with my pastor and friends.
